Of the approximately 3,100 whose first step on the
baseball ladder was in the Sooner State League,
60 played in at least one inning of a regular season Major League
game. The most successful alum is
Billy Williams who played at
Ponca City in 1956 and 1957. Others like
Ed Albrecht, who
threw for Lawton in 1947 and was the first Sooner State alum
to appear in the Majors, was only up briefly. There were All-Stars
like
Jackie Brandt and
Pete Runnels. There were future stars
in Japan like
Joe Stanka and
Daryl Spencer.
